scarce "scientific" work on earthquakes and other natural phenomena. Perkins (1698-1781) a Massachusetts physician who occasionally corresponded with Benjamin Franklin on scientific matters, argues in this pamphlet that "agitations of the sea" and earthquakes were caused by continental settling from the collapse of underground caverns. The anonymous pamphlet, which according to a note on verso of the title first appeared serially, has been ascribed to Perkins by the American Antiquarian Society, which holds both a copy with a contemporary attribution to Perkins and Perkins's own manuscript memoirs.
